Why we must hold ourselves accountable
If you are reading this, there is a chance that may be like me. You weren’t born into a family fortune or with dashing good looks. You are smart enough, but you may not be quite a genius sporting an insane IQ. You make mistakes, sometimes you make the same mistakes repeatedly. You want time to live your life, create and share memories with family and people you love, and have a purpose you are proud of.
There are many things in the world that frustrate you, but perhaps you have a feeling of helplessness. After all, how can we expel our mental energy on climate change, wealth inequality, humane work conditions, and retaining our freedoms when we have jobs requiring more effort from us, bills growing faster than our income, media invading our homes, and kids we are challenged to relate with?
I had a job since I was 16 years old. I had a 3-month break from having a job in my first quarter of college. Otherwise, up until about 6 months ago, I always worked. For 20 years I worked at a company, doing a job I hated. It was my second job after college and I was paid extremely well compared to the first post-college job that I also hated and paid poorly.
My second post-schooling job was in sales. I became very good and liked that I dictated what my earnings were. I bought a house, got married, saved money in a 401K, tried investing and…
