Mirrors can be deceiving. Many of us look in the mirror and identify flaws, imperfections, and things we wish to change. For example, when I smile in the mirror, I see a bump on my forehead, a crooked canine, and a double chin. But if you saw me, you’d notice my beautiful blue eyes, a dazzling smile, manly beard, and perfectly symmetrical face. OK…maybe that’s going a bit too far.

What I’m trying to get at is that everyone’s perception is different. Somebody may see a cupcake and think, “twenty more minutes on the treadmill if I eat this,” while another person thinks, “Yes, lemon cake. I love lemon cake. And a third person may be thinking, “That cupcake looks good, but I’m really craving Mongolian barbecue.”

Our perception isn’t always accurate or correct. And that can cause us to do dumb things. Maybe I always wear a hat to cover my bump or not smile because I want to hide my slight snaggletooth. But that would be kind of dumb, wouldn’t it? I may share this with my wife, and she’ll say, “Husband, you are…
